Every year, we look forward to the first monsoon rain. The downpour offers a welcome respite from scorching temperatures. However, slippery roads and high humidity during the season can damage your trusty two-wheeler. As the monsoons intensify over the country, here are some easy ways to look after your vehicle to maintain its performance.

Regular Cleaning and Drying

During the monsoons, your vehicle gets exposed to mud, dirt and grime, which could damage the various components. Develop a habit of cleaning your two-wheeler regularly and after each ride. Mix a mild detergent with water to get rid of grime and dirt. Ensure you pay attention to crevices that can collect water. Once you wash the vehicle, use a soft cloth to dry it and prevent rust formation. Keeping your bike clean and dry will help minimise the risk of moisture damage.

Protect Electrical Components

Your two-wheeler’s electrical system is vulnerable to water damage. Seal all electric circuits and apply a dielectric grease or silicone spray to your wires and connectors to protect them against water damage. Avoid riding through deep puddles, as it could lead to electrical malfunctions. While riding through waterlogged areas, maintain a slow and steady speed. Apply the brakes gently to prevent water from splashing onto the engine and other electrical parts.

Maintain Your Tyres

Your two-wheeler’s tyre condition significantly impacts your safety. Ensure your tyres have sufficient tread depth to provide proper grip. Worn-out tyres can lead to skidding and accidents on slippery surfaces. Regularly check the tyre pressure as well, as fluctuations in temperature can affect it. Maintaining the recommended tyre pressure improves handling and stability. Examine the tyres for cracks, bulges, or punctures, and replace them when necessary. Well-maintained tyres are crucial for a safe and comfortable ride in wet conditions.

Look After the Braking System

The braking system helps ensure your safety during the monsoons. Regularly check the brake pads for wear and tear. Worn-out brake pads can reduce braking efficiency, especially on wet roads. Replace them promptly if required. Additionally, keep the brake discs or drums clean and free from debris. Waterlogged roads can cause the brakes to become less responsive, so test your brakes carefully after riding through rain-soaked areas. Apply the brakes intermittently to dry them out and restore optimal performance. Avoid abrupt or hard braking as it can lead to skidding. Practising smooth and controlled braking techniques can help you stay safe on wet surfaces.

Prevent Rust and Corrosion

Moisture is the enemy of metal parts, and the monsoons expose your two-wheeler to an increased risk of rust and corrosion. Apply a high-quality wax or paint sealant to create a protective layer and protect vulnerable metal surfaces. Focus on exposed areas like the fuel tank, frame, and exhaust pipes. A rust-free chain is also essential for smooth functioning. Use a suitable lubricant to prevent rust and ensure optimal performance. Try to park your two-wheeler in a sheltered area to minimise exposure to rain and humidity. You can purchase a two-wheeler cover to protect your seat and exposed parts from heavy rainfall. Taking proactive measures against rust and corrosion helps prolong the life of your bike.

The monsoon requires you to take extra care of your two-wheeler. These tips help you protect your vehicle against damage caused by rain, waterlogging, and high humidity. Regularly cleaning the bike protects electrical and metal parts, ensuring the longevity of your two-wheeler.

If you’re ready to upgrade your bike, consider waiting until the end of the monsoon season. Getting accustomed to a new vehicle is easier in dry weather. Once you decide on the make and model, consider financing your purchase with an HDB two-wheeler loan. You could walk in to the nearest branch if you need guidance on which model to choose and enjoy high loan amounts, flexible repayment terms and competitive interest rates when you apply from a trusted and recognised lender like HDB. Alternatively, you could complete online application and upgrade your two-wheeler.
